Each student works on their own choice of painting. Every student's painting is an opportunity for me, their instructior to help them problem solve and complete a finished watercolor. I give demonstrations, offer hands on help and gentle critiques. A little chit-chat, a little music and some coffee! My goal is for each student to master the skills on their own level. Andy Smith captures the afternoon sun shining on a back road in this quintessential Lancaster County scene. I was interested in the perspective and the light from the car at night.

Different from me, but an interesting study. I was 15 minutes early to my interview with Andy Smith — the Lititz-based watercolorist. He lives near Lititz Springs Park. It was a beautiful late spring day, so I took a little walk. What might he do with the light coming through these trees?

Or notice the brilliant green heads of the mallard ducks as they swam along the spring? Light was everywhere here. I took notice of small, still-life tableaus as we entered and exited rooms. Two vases — lilacs in one and allium in the other — sat poised against a bowl of lemons on an old wooden table. A black-and-white house cat napped on the dining room rug. Antiques and books about nature and art history joined photographs of their daughter and family to line the shelves.

His paintings appeared throughout their home. And within each piece, the light seemed to shine as brightly as it did outside in the park.
